Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 5G Review, Features, and Price

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 5G Review, Features, and Price – At the Unpacked 2022 event, which was held last February, Samsung presented a new generation of smartphones and tablets. The company launched the Galaxy Tab S8 Series 5G from the tablet line, which was carried as a barrier-breaking device, with many things being improved, both inside and outside.

Galaxy Tab S8 5G Review

When looking at the Galaxy Tab S8 5G tablet package, the first impression is the very slim box. Because it’s the same as selling flagship smartphones, Samsung no longer provides a charger adapter in a box. So, it’s just a USB type C to C cable, SIM ejector, warranty card, and the tablet itself.

Turning to the tablet design, apparently not much has changed from its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S7, which has a straight magnetic field under the camera as a place to charge the S Pen, as well as the Galaxy Tab S8. There are two cameras on the back and one flash. Each corner of the tablet still uses a curved design with flat edges.

Equipped with Aluminum Armor material on the frame, the aim is to protect it from all kinds of impacts and falls. This device has 165.3 x 253.8 x 6.3mm and weighs 507 grams. Some speakers have carried in a quad-speaker arrangement with AKG and Dolby Atmos technology at the top and bottom corners.

At the bottom, there is also a USB type C port for charging. The power, volume and SIM card slot buttons are on the right, while the magnet is on the left. Please note Samsung is now pinning a fingerprint sensor on the power button. That’s why the buttons are flat and don’t stick out like the volume buttons.

Meanwhile, on the front, the Galaxy Tab S8 5G is a tablet with the most compact screen size among the other Tab S8 series, which is 11 inches. To note, the Galaxy Tab S8+ screen measures 12.4 inches and the Tab S8 Ultra 14.6 inches. The screen uses LTPS TFT. The front camera is placed in landscape on the right side of the tablet (when it is being erected).

Galaxy Tab S8 5G Camera

Talking about the camera will not be as professional as a smartphone camera. However, it is equipped with abundant features. The Galaxy Tab S8 is supported by an auto-framing feature for the front camera that allows a sharper video call experience. This feature can help users focus in the middle of the frame during a video call.

When you use it for Zoom, the auto-framing option will appear along with a background setting that can be set as the default for all video conferencing applications. This is quite effective because the user does not need to set the background individually in each application. As for the auto-framing performance, it works well and can detect faces during video calls well too. The front camera has a 12MP ultra-wide resolution.

Turning to the main camera, the Galaxy Tab S8 is equipped with a dual camera on the back, namely 13MP AF and 6MP ultra-wide. Samsung pinned autofocus on the main camera. As a result, the image can focus automatically even though the hand is sometimes unstable when holding the tablet. Although the resolution is not too high, the photos taken using this camera are quite good.

Galaxy Tab S8 5G Performance & Features

Samsung embeds the Galaxy Tab S8 Series 5G line with 4nm fabricated SoC from Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This chipset provides a 24% increase in CPU speed and 52% for GPU, thus providing reliable performance for all activities with efficient battery power. The tablet is also equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy Tab S8 5G can play games, but the large screen might make games like PUBG or Mobile Legend not as comfortable as playing on a smartphone. However, the game can still run smoothly, with good graphics settings. In PUBG, for example, you can play in Ultra HD graphics settings with Ultra frame rates, while HDR graphics can reach the maximum frame rate, Extreme. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate, thus providing a visually smooth and fluid gaming experience.

AKG and Dolby Atmos provide an even more powerful multimedia experience, like watching a movie in a cinema with the detailed sound offered. You can activate Dolby Atmos mode in the top panel menu to give a surround effect to the audio through a line of quad speakers placed in every corner of the device. The combination of Dolby Atmos and AKG is arguably quite luxurious for this one tablet class.

Samsung DeX

The Galaxy Tab S8 comes with a wider range of functional capabilities as a productivity tablet. Many of the upgraded or new features are present on this device, one of which is the Samsung Dex. Samsung DeX can change the tablet’s display to a desktop mode similar to Windows 11 with the taskbar underneath.

Unfortunately, because it adopts a landscape desktop display, some applications that usually appear portrait and cannot adjust the screen cannot run optimally. Meanwhile, TikTok and Instagram are still running well, but not as good as when viewed in portrait.

Apart from that, Samsung DeX provides multi-window capabilities like laptops or computers. So, it is very capable if users rely heavily on their tablet as a productivity tool from one task to another. DeX can also be mirrored to share the tablet screen to an external display. To enable DeX mode, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the panel menu at the top, then click the Dex option.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab S8 5G can also be used as an additional screen or a second screen from an external screen, such as a laptop or computer. This feature is called the Second screen, which Samsung has shared since the One UI 3.1 update. The Galaxy Tab S8 5G runs on One UI 4.1 based on Android 12.

S Pen

The S Pen is one of the accessories that make the Galaxy S series tablets different from other series. For this Galaxy Tab S8 Series 5G, Samsung presents a new generation of S Pen with increased latency, from 9ms on the Galaxy Tab S7 now to 6.2ms. This improvement allows the screen to respond more quickly to the S Pen.

In professional use, the S Pen makes it easy to digitally draw or edit any media, from photos or videos, via Samsung’s built-in applications, Clip Studio and PENUP.

But for ordinary users, the S Pen can be used for many activities, such as scrolling social media, controlling the drama currently playing on Netflix, writing keywords instead of typing via the on-screen keyboard, and much more. Some of them can take advantage of Air Gestures supported by the S Pen and choose their gestures and effects.

Samsung provides the Galaxy Tab S8 5G with an 8,000 mAh battery capacity with 45W Super Fast Charging. However, as mentioned above, buying a tablet does not come with a charger adapter but a USB type-c to c cable plugged into a smartphone. So, the tablet battery can double as a portable charger.

I am quite amazed about its power resistance because this tablet is quite powered efficient. Streaming drama for 2 hours drained only 11% of the battery, and audio calls for about 4 hours 45 minutes drained 30% of the power without giving a significant increase in back temperature. Samsung claims the battery can be fully charged in 80 minutes regarding charging.
