Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio Review, Specifications, and Price – Microsoft officially launched its newest Surface product, the Surface Laptop Studio. Surface Laptop Studio is the successor to the Surface Book 3 laptop, released in 2020.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio Review
After reviewing the Surface Book 3 last year, it was clear that Microsoft needed a new strategy. All Surface Books are tablets that mount to a keyboard base, which houses an additional battery and an optional discrete graphics card.
At first glance, the Surface Laptop Studio looks like a direct competitor to the MacBook Pro. Before you even look at its moving screen, it’s clear that this is no ordinary notebook. The bottom looks like two tablets of slightly different sizes stacked together.
That gives you a thin edge to hold but a bit higher to match the specs it carries. Weighing 3.8 to 4 pounds (depending on the chip you get), it’s more than half a pound heavier than the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4.
Compared to its predecessor, this compact device is equipped with various new features, one of which is a 120 Hz screen that can make the animation display on the screen smoother than the 60 Hz screen.
This device is also equipped with a Thunderbolt 4 connector and a touchscreen feature that supports the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus. So, what are the other features of this product?
Pros and Cons
Features and Specifications
One of the most striking new features of the Surface Laptop Studio is its design. Instead of being removable, the PixelSense Flow Display screen measuring 14.4 inches (2,400 x 1,600 pixels) is now connected to a hinge that cannot be removed. This hinge allows the laptop to be used in three modes: laptop, stage, and Studio.
Laptop Mode allows the device to look like a laptop in general. Then, Stage mode will make the screen can be pulled up to cover the keyboard and leaving the touchpad. Meanwhile, Studio mode will turn the laptop into a tablet that will go back to the keyboard and touchpad, just like the previous generation Surface laptop models.
On the hardware aspect, Surface Laptop Studio is powered by a processor configuration (CPU) up to Intel Core i7, an integrated graphics processor (GPU) Iris Xe, up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti external GPU option. The CPU and GPU components are combined with 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of SSD storage media.
The Surface Laptop Studio battery lasts 12 hours 25 minutes at a refresh rate of 120Hz (in our tests). When we lowered it down to 60Hz, it lasted 17 hours and 15 minutes if you needed to save energy. But our advice, to spoil your eyes whenever possible, keep it on at 120Hz.
Surface Laptop Studio Price
You will love using Surface Laptop Studio because of its features. Its flexible screen is far less frustrating than the Surface Book. The Surface Laptop Studio has an excellent keyboard and is powerful enough to play some games.
Starting at $1,600, the Surface Laptop Studio competes with the Dell XPS 15, 16-inch MacBook Pro, and Razer Blade. You’ll have to shell out at least $2,100 to get an NVIDIA GPU, making it more powerful than much more powerful gaming laptops.
So here’s the question: How much is tilt screen worth to you? If it’s more important than having the best CPU and GPU power, Surface Laptop Studio will be for you. But if you want genuine power for the same price, get the Razer Blade 14.
