How to Block Robocalls and Telemarketing Phone Calls

How to Block Robocalls and Telemarketing Phone CallsHave you ever been annoyed by a robot/machine phone (Robocall)? Yes, indeed, Robocall has many complaints. But know that Robocall is the most annoying weakness of modern technology for many people.

Usually, calls using Robocall are made by telemarketing. These calls are unsolicited, prerecorded calls to landlines and wireless.

How to Block Robocalls

What irritates me is that it is not uncommon for these calls to be made at the most inconvenient time to receive a call. For example, when you have a meeting, you just woke up, or someone even rings in the middle of the night. Anyway, not very polite.

Telemarketing calls are nothing new. But to be honest, a lot of people are feeling very disturbed by the call these days. This is because apart from trying to sell you stuff, robocalls can also be deceptive and dangerous. For example, Robocall scams usually steal your data by asking for your credit card number, address, and other private data.

The Robocalls Outbreak is worse than ever

According to a United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report published recently, robocall complaints have increased significantly in 2017 and have increased fivefold since 2009. That is the U.S. robocall outbreak. Has grown five times in just eight years. That’s certainly very bad!

A new report reveals that the FTC had received more than 375,000 complaints about automated robocalls monthly in 2017 compared to just 63,000 per month in 2009.

About these Robocall calls, this has increased to a total of 4.5 million complaints received in 2017. In addition to automated calls, 2.5 million complaints about direct telemarketing calls were also filed last year.

Compare this with statistics in 2016, which showed complaints of 3.4 million robocalls and 1.8 million telemarketing calls. Again, there was a surprising spike.

The most common Robocalls and telemarketing spam include:

  1. How to Reduce Your Debt (credit cards, mortgages, student loans)
  2. Call dropped or no message
  3. Vacations & timeshares
  4. Insurance Guarantee & protection plan
  5. Call pretending to be a government officer, business, or family and friends
  6. Medical & prescription growth in Robocall

The increase in telemarketing calls and robocalls cannot be separated from technological advances, especially with Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, which has driven a rise in automated telemarketing calls.

With affordable internet access and available software such as auto-dialer and Caller ID spoofing, illegal telemarketers can make increasingly high volumes of calls at low cost from anywhere, and they can do so while hiding their identity.

Here are some ways to stop or block robocalls:

  1. Use a call blocker. Ask your phone service provider if it offers a robocall call blocking service. If not, encourage your provider to provide it. You can also visit the FCC website for information and resources on available robotic call-blocking tools to help reduce unwanted calls.
  2. Block unknown callers. Many phone companies allow you to block calls that don’t show a number on caller ID. Check with your provider to find out how to enable this feature. Note: if someone you know calls you and blocks their outgoing number, their calls will not work if you enable this feature.
  3. Don’t answer. This is the easiest solution to get rid of robocalls. If you receive a call from an unknown number or a number that does not appear on caller ID, do not answer. If it’s an important call, the person will leave a message, and you can get back to them.
  4. Subscribe to the Do Not Call Registry. This step will stop many robocalls before they start. If you are registered, it is illegal for many robocalls to call you.
  5. Hang up the phone. If you answer the phone and the caller (often a recording) asks you to press a button to stop receiving calls, hang up. Scammers often use this trick to identify and target direct responders. Once they know the number is active, you will receive more calls in the future.
