DJI Ronin 4D Review: 8K Cinema Camera with Powerful Features

DJI Ronin 4D Review: 8K Cinema Camera With Powerful Features – DJI Ronin 4D is officially released on the market. This cinema camera is specially designed for professionals who want high flexibility, affordable cinematic production costs, and high quality.

With the release of the DJI Ronin 4D for the first time, DJI is now breaking the standard of cinema cameras. This camera brings a series of new technologies and innovations never seen in any cinema camera. That makes the competition for cinema cameras even more fierce.

Various parties also say that this cinema camera is very reliable with its advanced features. What are the features? Here are some of them that we have collected.

DJI Ronin 4D Design

Ronin 4D is a complex camera product, so let’s look at the design. The first is the “Zenmuse X9” mirrorless camera specially designed for R4D. Zenmuse X9 has a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor and three mount options: DJI’s DL mount, Sony E-Mount, and the M-mount used for surveillance cameras/mirrorless Leica cameras.

DJI has three native lenses, including the 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm models, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. They are quite light at 180 grams each as they are designed for gimbal use and cost $1,199 each, costly for an f/2.8 prime lens.

The main camera gimbal has three axes of movement with a quick release lock for quick balance. However, the standout feature is the Z-arm that gave it the “4D” name, one of the first in gimbals, according to DJI. It uses an internal balancing system combined with multiple motion detection sensors on the front and buttons that help it smooth out walking, running, or other vertical movements.

You’ll find the HDMI, time code, and DC power port on the right side of the body. On the left, switch to control power, recording, main gimbal, Z-axis, and a multi-dial that controls focus by default. However, it can also be programmed for other functions such as gimbal control.

Zenmuse X9 Camera

In the camera sector, the DJI Ronin 4D brings the Zenmuse X9 camera directly attached to the gimbal. The Zenmuse X9 camera module comes with a full-frame sensor. DJI provides two camera options: the Zenmuse X9-6K with 6K video recording capabilities and the Zenmuse X9-8K for 8K.

Zenmuse X9 supports video recording with the H.264 codec. Both can also be directly recorded internally with Apple ProRes and RAW formats. Zenmuse X9-6K can record video at up to 6K resolution at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps. Meanwhile, Zenmuse X9-8K can record up to 8K 75fps resolution.

This sensor promises dynamic range coverage of more than 14 stops. Dual native ISO support at ISO 800 and ISO 5000 is also available, making it highly reliable in all lighting conditions. Even in low light conditions.

Thanks to the DJI Cinema Color System (DCCS), Zenmuse X9 is claimed to be able to record with very consistent colors and very natural skin tones. To support shooting in very bright conditions, Zenmuse X9 is equipped with 9 integrated ND filters that can be selected from ND2 to ND512.

For the Zenmuse X9 lens ecosystem, you can use a lens with a DL-mount from DJI and an M-mount from Leica. There is no further information on whether DJI will provide adapter accessories or mounts that support the lens ecosystem from other camera manufacturers.

DJI Ronin 4D Features

The DJI Ronin 4D is a complete cinema camera package. One Ronin 4D unit already consists of a camera with a full-frame sensor, a 4-axis gimbal, a LIDAR focus system, video transmission, and an integrated control system. That way, film or video production will be more efficient and as easy as possible to produce more impressive camera movements.

According to DJI, Ronin 4D adopts its most advanced cinematic platform called CineCore 3.0. This platform enables the camera to record RAW video at 8K resolution with highly accurate color reproduction a range of functions with support for AI technology. It supports multi-link monitoring systems with low latency control.

4-Axis Gimbal

Entering the gimbal area, the Ronin 4D is the world’s first cinema camera directly equipped with a 4-axis gimbal. The gimbal is highly advanced with the industry’s first Z-axis technology capable of effectively eliminating vertical camera shake.

DJI has also adopted its drone technology into this gimbal. Borrowed technologies such as ToF sensor, dual-visor sensor, IMU sensor, and barometer. All of these sensors are presented to provide best-in-class stabilization capabilities.

LiDAR Focus System

Another innovative DJI Ronin 4D feature is LiDAR Range Finder’s focus system. Relying on laser technology, users can get a much faster and more precise focus setting experience. LiDAR Autofocus provides three focus control modes: manual, Autofocus, and Automated Manual Focus (AMF).

For your information, this LiDAR sensor is also embedded in several superior products from Apple. Like the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max series and iPad Pro 2020. With the LiDAR sensor, the Ronin 4 is claimed to be able to recognize and recognize and scan shots with 43,200 touch sensor points at a distance of about 10 meters. That’s what makes the focus of the object locked quickly. In addition, this technology can also make images remain sharp even in low light conditions.

The Automated Manual Focus (AMF) mode is also very unique. In this mode, the focus system will track the subject automatically during video recording. If required, the camera operator can also directly take over the focus settings. To support manual focus control and AMF, DJI provides a special monitor that will make it easier for cinematographers to adjust the focus with great precision.

Low Latency and Long Range

There is no doubt about the reliability of the DJI Ronin 4D. One of them is thanks to O3 Pro transmission features and technology. This technology can transmit the video that was shot directly (live) to a monitor quickly with a resolution of 1080p/fps. Meanwhile, the range is capable of up to 20 thousand feet or about 6,000 meters.

The convenience and superiority of channeling camera shots are supported by 256-bit AES encryption. With this support, the video results look smoother, and the latency level is minimal. On the other hand, O3 Pro is also equipped with support for the DFS 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequency bands, making it stable even in environmental conditions with dense signals and complex building areas.

The DJI Ronin 4D also supports the use of an external monitor. However, the Ronin 4D ecosystem is also directly supported by a 7-inch wireless monitor with a brightness level of 1500 nits. Unlike other external monitors, this monitor from DJI is equipped with a gyroscope. This monitor can be used as motion control for the Ronin 4D camera.

This monitor has been equipped with a MicroSD slot for storage space, Ronin 4D handgrip, DJI Master Wheels, DJI Force Pro, and DJI Three-Channel Follow Focus to support this function. Another exciting thing is that multi-monitors are also still possible to adjust production needs.

Storage, Audio, and Battery

Sometimes, the problem experienced by cinema video creators is about the capacity of the storage media. So they find it difficult to save the video recordings of the best moments. Luckily, this DJI Ronin 4D has four types of support for storage memory. These include a USB SSD, Cfexpress, DJI’s 1TB PRO SSD, or using a Type-B memory card.

Meanwhile, for the battery sector, this product is not far from the Ronin 2 and Inspire 2. It adopts the TB50 Intelligent Battery with a capacity of 4280 mAh, which can be used for video capture for approximately 2.5 hours. Including use during extreme weather, though.

DJI Ronin 4D Price

Talking about the prices marketed for the DJI Ronin 4D, there are indeed various. DJI’s party released a different price with the two flagship series. For the 6K series, it is priced at 7,200 USD. The series includes a camera body, Zenmuse X9-6K Gimbal Camera, LiDAR Range Finder, High-Bright Main Monitor, Hand Grips, Top Handle, TB50 battery, and case.
