Canon EOS R3 Review, Viewfinder Focus Feature, Specs and PriceCanon has finally officially announced the presence of the EOS R3. This professional-grade full-frame mirrorless camera brings a range of advanced technologies never before seen in the EOS R line.

The EOS R3 is the go-to camera for professional photographers who need high speed and image quality and are tough for shooting in all terrains. The technology and features embedded in this camera can answer these needs, including videography needs.

An interesting new feature is the super-advanced eye control feature. It gives photographers the convenience of finding focus through eye movement while shooting. And, no less important for professional photographers, that Canon mirrorless cameras are guaranteed two years from Datascrip. Said Canon Business Unit Director.

Canon EOS R3 Review

The Canon EOS R3 comes with a magnesium alloy body. The body design includes a vertical grip. So, it can be adjusted according to user needs for landscape or portrait use. For durability features, the body design is dust and weather resistant to the same standards as the EOS-1D DSLR camera.

EOS R3 Specifications

In the specification sector, the Canon EOS R3 comes with a full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with a resolution of 24.1 megapixels. The sensor is supported by the EOS DIGIC X processor. According to Canon, the EOS R3 is a full-frame mirrorless EOS R created with speed in mind.

This camera can shoot non-stop at speeds of up to 30 frames per second, with no lag in the viewfinder. Its high-speed shooting capabilities also allow flash sync at speeds of up to 1/180 second. The Canon EOS R3 also supports video recording at up to 6K RAW 60 fps resolution or 4K oversample of 6K video.

To ensure that the captured images avoid blur, this camera has been equipped with a stabilizer feature on the sensor that can dampen vibrations up to eight stops.

Even though it is the newest generation of EOS-R, the sensor resolution is indeed relatively small. Moreover, when compared to the previous EOS R5, which used a 45-megapixel full-frame sensor. The main reason why the EOS R3 uses a 24.1-megapixel sensor is the target user.

This camera offers extremely fast, non-stop shooting capabilities and is dedicated to journalistic and sports photographers who often cover the field. That way, photographers no longer need to bother reducing the size of the photo file to send it to the editorial office or photo agency.

EOS R3 Feature

1. Sensor back-illuminated stacked CMOS 24,1MP

This sensor is combined with the Digic X processor, which provides speed, accuracy, and excellent image quality on the EOS R3. 30fps continuous shooting can be achieved at full resolution, even when the AF and AE options are active.

2. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology provides outstanding AF speed and accuracy. The EOS R3 also offers a very interesting cutting-edge feature, namely Eye Control AF. This feature allows the user to select the focus point using eye movements via the Electronic View Finder (EVF).

3. Vehicle Priority AF

Autofocus on the EOS R3 can detect fast-moving cars and motorcycles for an even more specific focus on the driver’s helmet. This camera also has AF detection up to EV -7.5, which helps users focus when shooting in low light conditions. These features are based on EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking & Recognition).

4. 6K 60p RAW Videos

To meet the needs of professional video, the EOS R3 is also capable of recording videos in 6K 60p RAW or 4K 120p 10-bit format without cropping. Users can also get 4K 60p video with higher quality, by oversampling from the 6K format. Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ 10bit 4:2:2 are also available to give users flexibility and ease in adapting various post-production workflows.

5. Two memory card slots

The EOS R3 has two memory card slots (CFexpress Type B and SD card). This CFexpress Type B supports high-speed data transfers up to 2GB/sec. With this media, continuous shooting of up to thousands of images in RAW or RAW+JPEG format can be realized and can record high-quality 6K RAW video.

6. 5 AXIS In-Body Image Stabilization

Like the EOS R5 and R6, the EOS R3 is also equipped with 5 AXIS In-Body Image Stabilization of up to 5.5 stops. When paired with a compatible RF lens, the effectiveness can be up to 8 stops, making on-the-go video shooting smoother and at the same time. Long exposure shooting without a tripod also becomes more stable.

7. Complete connectivity

In terms of connectivity, the EOS R3 is equipped with various networks, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Press photographers who need speed in sending photos can also use wired LAN connectivity for delivery to remote FTP, FTPS, or SFTP servers without the need for additional accessories.

Users can also use Mobile File Transfer which allows the camera to quickly send files to a smartphone via a USB cable. Where available, users can also take advantage of the blazing-fast 5G cellular network to quickly deliver to remote servers.

8. Extra-large battery

To ensure efficiency and effectiveness when used, the EOS R3 is equipped with a large capacity 2700 mAH LP-E19 battery to ensure long shooting times. If needed, the battery can also be charged using a power bank that supports Power Delivery (PD) via a compatible USB-C cable.

Excellent Autofocus System

Updates then propagate in the autofocus sector. Canon enhances its flagship Dual Pixel AF autofocus system with better subject recognition algorithms. This camera can recognize various subjects from humans, animals to vehicles such as racing cars and motorcycles.

All autofocus areas now also support the automatic subject tracking feature. But, one of the most interesting is the autofocus tracking capability. The EOS R3 can now more quickly and precisely track subjects’ faces and eyes.

The Canon EOS R3 is the first EOS R variant whose viewfinder supports the Eye Control Autofocus feature. This feature is very sophisticated because it allows the viewfinder to automatically detect the user’s eyes to determine the desired focus area.

So, users only need to look at the subject and no longer bother moving the focus area using the joystick control when shooting with the viewfinder. For other features, the Canon EOS R3 is equipped with a CF Express card slot and an SD UHS-II memory card. The connectivity it brings includes LAN, 5GHz WiFi, USB, and Bluetooth.

Canon EOS R3 price

The Canon EOS R3 is scheduled to be available on the market in November 2021. The Canon EOS R3 price is US$5999.
