Audi Tests RS Q E-Tron hybrid, for the 2022 Dakar Rally


Audi Tests RS Q E-Tron hybrid – Audi is testing a hybrid-powered rally car, the RS Q E-Tron, in the Moroccan Desert. After undergoing a series of endurance tests, the plan is that this rally car will be prepared to participate in the 2022 Dakar Rally.

The Audi RS Q E-Tron was put to the test by Dakar legends Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. Then there is also a long-time touring car racer, Mattias Ekström, who is also testing this hybrid rally car.

This car passed a series of tests ranging from speed tests, extreme braking to jumps over dunes. The Audi RS Q E-Tron got quite a tough test in a sandstorm and temperatures in the Moroccan Desert that reached 100 degrees Celsius.

“Several new problems arose at high temperatures, which repeatedly caused disruption to the test and needed to be resolved before the next test,” said Q Motorsport team principal Sven Quandt.

The Audi RS Q E-Tron relies on an electric drivetrain with two modified Formula E motors, one on each axle. Since you won’t find a charging station in the middle of the desert, Audi uses a ready-to-use TFSI engine as part of an energy converter that charges the battery while driving and braking.

It’s not a zero-emissions car, but it stays in a relatively efficient power band (between 4,500RPM and 6,000RPM), which should reduce the driver’s environmental impact.

Audi Sport will continue to test the RS Q E-Tron in various conditions and locations in the coming months. Meanwhile, the Audi factory in Germany is producing one of the two RS Q E-Trons that will take off at the 2022 Dakar Rally. Next year, the plan is for the Dakar Rally to be held on January 2 in Ha’il, Saudi Arabia, and ending in Jeddah for 12 days. Then.

If Audi succeeds, the RS Q E-Tron will become a stronger platform for eco-friendly endurance racing. While not a pure EV, it will handle long stages (up to 500 miles) with a significantly reduced emission footprint.
